2016-2017 PTA President, Melanie Peacock
On behalf of the Fairfield PTA, I want to extend a warm welcome to our new Fairfield families and a welcome back to our returning Bulldogs! Although the transition from summertime fun to the routine of school can be a challenge, I hope you are settling into your fall schedule. This is my eighth year as a Fairfield parent. My husband Barrow and I have three sons. Our oldest is a former FEM Bulldog and a 7th grader at CMM. Our younger boys are current Bulldogs in the 5th and 3rd grades.
Fairfield is a school of exemplary academic achievement. Our PTA has worked tirelessly in collaboration with our faculty and staff to make Fairfield the best learning environment possible for our children. This effective family-school partnership has been recognized nationally this year. I am proud to announce that Fairfield received the National PTA School of Excellence Designation for 2016-2018. Fairfield was one of only two schools in Louisiana to receive the award for this two year cycle. Read more about this exciting award in the Shreveport Times.
We arrived at Fairfield knowing only a few other parents but have felt welcomed by the Fairfield Family from the beginning. I believe a large part of my feeling of “belonging” stemmed from involvement in the PTA. Our PTA has a multitude of ways to become involved and has lots of exciting things happening this year. Our families have access to the My School Anywhere
app which contains the school and PTA calendar, Tuesday Talk, student and teacher information. It can all be accessed anytime from anywhere. Another very helpful source of information is the Fairfield Elementary Magnet School Facebook page
. When you “Like” this page important announcements will show up in your Facebook feed. A panel of teachers and parents also administer a Fairfield Parent Page (also on Facebook) as a forum for exchanging information in a family friendly forum. It is open to our families only and requires approval to join. Please email me if you would like to be added. Finally, this website serves to showcase our school as well as to provide information about the school and PTA events. Teachers’ individual websites cab be accessed through the website as well as links to important education enhancing sites.
So what does the PTA have planned for this year? Our annual fall fundraiser and direct donations drive have just ended. Did you know that as a result of our fundraising efforts the PTA is able to place needed technology and items requested by our teachers into our classrooms? Last year alone, we purchased close to $70,000 in technology and teacher grants requests. This included two classroom sets of laptops, a classroom set of iPads (all with charging carts), archery equipment for PE, microscopes, four classroom sets of boogie boards, reading materials and many other teacher grant requested items. We were also able to send two teachers to the SDE National Conference in Chicago. These purchases were only possible through generous donations and fundraising efforts of our Bulldog families. Although raising money to provide these education enhancing items for our school is an important aspect of our PTA, we also focus on bringing families together to strengthen our Bulldog community. Some of these events include Bulldog Bash, Fall Carnival, Faculty/Staff Appreciation, Grandparents Day, Field Day, Spring Fling, Healthy Habits and PTA Contests.
Traditionally, PTA brings to mind a group of moms organizing to support our children’s’ education. Fairfield is breaking new ground by actively seeking the involvement of our dads and male role models in our PTA. We are thrilled with the success of our new DADS Club (Directing Awesome and Dedicated Students). Over 120 Dads, Step-Dads, and Granddads have already signed up. The DADS Club represents a group of male role models who are visible on our campus thereby reinforcing the importance of education to our children simply by their presence at the school. DADS Club members serve as carpool greeters and play with students at recess as well as host events throughout the year like Muffins with Mom, Career Day and a Valentine’s Day Lunch just to name a few. Read more about our DADS Club in the Shreveport Times
Our Buildings & Grounds committee works very hard throughout the school year to make our campus more attractive. Our Spirit Wear Committee provides t-shirts, yard signs and magnets to help you show your Bulldog Spirit. The Newsletter and Website Committees keep us informed. Cutting out those Box Tops is a simple yet effective way to earn money for classroom purchases. The Fifth Grade Committee has several super fun events planned throughout the year to enhance our oldest Bulldogs’ final year at Fairfield. Our Library Committee assists with book fairs and other activities. Finally, our Yearbook committee captures special moments throughout the year and publishes them in a quality Yearbook you will surely want to purchase.
As you can see, our PTA is busy, and there are plenty of ways you can become involved. If you are not currently serving on a committee, please consider volunteering. It is an excellent way to get to know other parents, use your talents for the benefit of our school and develop new friendships. Thank you to our families who have joined the PTA – we encourage all families to join. I am looking forward to an exciting year, and I welcome your input and suggestions. Please email me anytime at email@example.com
. I hope you will join me in being #FairfieldProud!
